Gulmarg Avalanche Claims Foreigner’s Life, Traps Multiple Skiers
An avalanche struck the ski slopes of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, claiming the life of one skier and leaving several foreigners trapped. The avalanche, characterized by a rapid flow of snow on the mountain slope, was triggered amidst continuous rainfall and snowfall in the region, prompting warnings from authorities.
The incident occurred on the Kongdoori slopes, where a number of foreigners were skiing without the presence of local residents. While five skiers have been rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital, rescue operations are ongoing with the assistance of Army personnel and a patrolling team from the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
A fresh avalanche warning was issued for 10 districts of the Union territory by the J&K disaster management authority on Wednesday. Anantnag and Kulgam were placed under a low-danger level warning, while Bandipora and Baramulla were classified under a medium-level warning for the following 24 hours. Additionally, districts such as Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Kupwara, and Ganderbal were warned of high-danger level avalanches above 2200 meters, urging residents to take precautions and avoid vulnerable areas.
Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern for the missing skiers in a social media post, emphasizing the risks associated with skiing off-piste or groomed slopes in the ‘back country’. He urged for prayers for the safe recovery of the missing individuals and cautioned about the inherent dangers of the sport.
Amidst the ongoing Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, apprehensions arose regarding the safety of athletes following the avalanche. However, J&K Sports Council secretary Nuzhat Guli reassured that all athletes are secure, and the scheduled events are proceeding as planned, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
