PM Modi Inaugurates India’s First Underwater Metro in Kolkata, Unveils Projects Worth ₹15,400 Crore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Kolkata marked a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development as he inaugurated several ambitious projects, including the nation’s first underwater metro line. With a focus on enhancing urban mobility and connectivity, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for various initiatives worth ₹15,400 crore during his 10-day visit to 12 states and union territories.
The centerpiece of PM Modi’s Kolkata visit was the inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s foray into underwater metro services. Stretching over 4.8 kilometers, this groundbreaking project was completed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore and boasts the deepest metro station in India, situated 30 meters below ground level at Howrah. This section will facilitate vital connections, including access to the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V, once passenger services commence.
While inaugurating the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility, underscoring the importance of such projects in fostering economic growth and development. He also flagged off additional train services aimed at improving transportation within Kolkata, including the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.
In addition to the Kolkata Metro milestone, PM Modi dedicated several other key projects across the country, including the Pune Metro from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project (Phase IB) from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station, and stretches of the Agra Metro and Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor. These initiatives signify the government’s concerted efforts to bolster infrastructure and connectivity nationwide.
PM Modi’s visit to Kolkata also included a symbolic metro ride with school students on the newly inaugurated underwater metro line, showcasing the transformative impact of such projects on daily life. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section not only represents a technological marvel but also underscores India’s progress in infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future endeavors.
The inauguration of India’s first underwater metro line is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of all those involved in its construction. The project, which began in 2009, required meticulous planning and execution, culminating in a remarkable feat of engineering. With a significant portion of the East-West Metro corridor now operational, commuters can look forward to enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times across Kolkata.
PM Modi’s visit to Kolkata comes on the heels of his recent trip to West Bengal, where he addressed rallies and reiterated his commitment to addressing key issues facing the state. His proactive approach to governance and focus on infrastructure development reflect the government’s vision for a more prosperous and inclusive India.
As India continues its journey towards economic growth and development, initiatives like the underwater metro in Kolkata serve as poignant reminders of the nation’s potential and aspirations. With concerted efforts and strategic investments in infrastructure, India is poised to emerge as a global leader in innovation and progress.
