India Launches “Mission Divyastra,” Unveils Agni-5 MIRV Missile Redefining Geostrategic Dynamics

New Delhi, India: In a groundbreaking announcement today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed the initiation of “Mission Divyastra,” unveiling the Agni-5 MIRV missile, a domestically developed weaponry system set to revolutionize India’s geopolitical stance. Crafted over a decade by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Agni-5 MIRV missile embarked on its inaugural flight, marking a significant milestone in India’s defense capabilities and strategic posture, especially within Southeast Asia.

The Agni-5 MIRV missile incorporates Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, a sophisticated system allowing a single missile to deploy multiple warheads, striking diverse targets simultaneously. This technological feat places India among an exclusive group of nations, including the US, UK, Russia, France, and China, possessing MIRV capabilities.

President of India, Ms. Droupadi Murmu, lauded the accomplishment as a pivotal advancement towards India’s self-reliance and geopolitical influence. She commended the DRDO team for their dedication and expertise in developing this cutting-edge technology, emphasizing its role in India’s quest for excellence and autonomy.

Dr. V K Saraswat, former Director General of DRDO and current Member of Science and Technology at NITI Aayog, hailed the Agni-5 MIRV missile as a significant force multiplier, particularly enhancing India’s second-strike capabilities amidst its no-first-use policy. He underscored the importance of executing a retaliatory strike with precision, a capability now achieved by India through “Mission Divyastra.”

Developing a ballistic missile with MIRV capabilities represents a formidable engineering challenge, requiring intricate avionics systems and high-accuracy sensor packages to ensure precise targeting. Each MIRV payload within the Agni-5 missile possesses its own guidance and control system, enabling independent targeting of multiple adversaries within a 5,000-plus km radius.

During the test, the Agni-5 MIRV missile is believed to have been launched within a range of 3,550 km, as indicated by a no-fly NOTAM issued in the vicinity. Dr. Saraswat elaborated on the missile’s versatility, highlighting its potential to engage moving targets such as ships through integrated seeker technology.

The Agni series has been integral to defense strategy since the 1990s, with the Agni-5 missile undergoing numerous tests in recent years. However, the addition of MIRV technology elevates India’s deterrence capabilities to unprecedented levels, reinforcing its position as a formidable force in the region.

“Mission Divyastra” signifies a paradigm shift in defense doctrine, empowering the nation with a potent deterrent against emerging threats while bolstering its status as a leading force in the global security landscape.
