BJP Secures 8 Seats, Samajwadi Party Claims Two in Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha Polls
In a surprising turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured an unexpected additional seat in the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, aided by Jayant Chaudhary’s Rashtriya Lok Dal and certain dissident members of the Samajwadi Party (SP). Today’s tally saw the BJP clinching eight out of the state’s 10 seats, while the remaining two were claimed by the SP, which had initially anticipated winning three.
The BJP’s triumph in Uttar Pradesh was strategically orchestrated by fielding an eighth candidate for the state’s 10 Rajya Sabha seats, thereby compelling an election. Based on numerical calculations, it was predetermined that seven seats would be allocated to the BJP, leaving three for the Samajwadi Party.
Anticipating a shift in allegiance, BJP insiders had begun privately asserting that several Samajwadi Party MLAs would engage in cross-voting during the polling. Estimates fluctuated between 7 and 10 potential defectors. By late evening preceding the election, signs of dissent emerged, as eight MLAs abstained from a meeting convened by party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Moreover, on the morning of the elections, the party’s chief whip tendered resignation.
The voting process unfolded today amidst suspense and drama, marked by seven members of the Samajwadi Party engaging in cross-voting, while the vote of one SP MLA was invalidated. Following the conclusion of voting, five Samajwadi Party MPs sought an audience with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The eight victorious BJP candidates include former Union Minister RPN Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, Amarpal Maurya, Sangeeta Balwant, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhna Singh, Naveen Jain, and Sanjay Seth. Notably, Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Bachchan and Ramji Lal Suman emerged victorious, while Alok Ranjan, the third SP candidate, faced defeat at the hands of the BJP.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Pradhan Maurya expressed confidence in BJP’s comprehensive victory, asserting that all eight BJP candidates would emerge triumphant. He extended congratulations to the winning candidates, including the two from the SP camp, while also acknowledging the continuous success of BJP’s electoral journey across various tiers of governance.
On the other hand, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav warned of disciplinary action against MLAs found guilty of cross-voting, attributing their actions to governmental pressure and BJP’s relentless pursuit of power. He criticized BJP’s tactics during the Chandigarh elections and accused the ruling party of employing all means to secure victory.
This unexpected setback dealt a blow to the Opposition bloc, which had been vying for two additional seats in the Upper House during this round of elections. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is gradually approaching a majority in the 245-member Rajya Sabha, a pivotal factor in the legislative process for passing or blocking bills.
