BJP Chief JP Nadda Resigns as Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh, Elected from Gujarat in Recent Polls
In a significant development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda tendered his resignation as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Rajya Sabha representing Himachal Pradesh. This move came after Nadda secured a seat in the upper house from Gujarat in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections. His resignation was accepted by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, effective from March 4, 2024, as stated in a parliamentary bulletin.
Nadda’s election from Gujarat marked a strategic shift, as he opted to contest from the western state instead of his home state, Himachal Pradesh, where the party’s victory was uncertain. His nomination as the BJP’s candidate from Gujarat proved successful, as four BJP candidates secured seats in the upper house from the state.
The Rajya Sabha elections witnessed 41 candidates winning seats unopposed, setting the stage for a significant political landscape ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Nadda’s successful election from Gujarat highlighted the BJP’s strategic maneuvers in consolidating its position in key states.
However, the BJP’s victory in Himachal Pradesh was not without its share of drama. The lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state witnessed intense political maneuvering, with six Congress MLAs cross-voting in favor of the BJP nominee. This unexpected turn of events led to a tie between the Congress candidate Abhishek Singhvi and BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan, both receiving 34 votes each.
The deadlock was ultimately broken through a dramatic lottery, favoring the BJP candidate, Harsh Mahajan. The Congress’s efforts to contain the rebellion within its ranks reflected the high stakes involved, with senior leaders rushing to strategize damage control measures. The intervention of observers Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar underscored the party’s determination to maintain stability ahead of the general elections.
The repercussions of the cross-voting were swift, with Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania announcing the disqualification of the six MLAs involved in the rebellion. This move aimed to uphold the integrity of the legislative process while sending a clear message against defections and subversion of democratic principles.
Nadda’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha seat representing Himachal Pradesh signifies a significant transition in his political journey, as he prepares to assume responsibilities from his new base in Gujarat. His electoral victory and subsequent resignation underscore the dynamic nature of Indian politics, characterized by strategic maneuvering and shifting alliances.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Nadda’s role as BJP chief and a key player in national politics is poised to become even more pivotal, shaping the party’s trajectory in the run-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and beyond.
