Jammu & Kashmir Reeling After String of Terror Attacks: Security Forces on High Alert

CFDRA – June 12, 2024

Jammu and Kashmir has been struck by a surge in violence, with three separate terror attacks rocking the region in a mere three days. This escalation has prompted heightened security measures across the state.

The recent wave of terror began with a deadly attack on a bus carrying pilgrims on Sunday. The bus, traveling from the Shiv Khori temple to Katra in Reasi district, was targeted by terrorists. The attack caused the bus to plunge into a deep gorge, resulting in nine fatalities and injuring 41 others.

In a swift response, security forces implemented stricter measures to prevent further attacks. However, these efforts were challenged by a fresh wave of violence.

Attacks in Doda and Kathua:

  • Doda District: Terrorists opened fire on a joint checkpoint manned by security forces in the Chattergalla area along the Bhadarwah-Pathankot road late Tuesday night. The exchange of fire resulted in injuries to three security personnel.

  • Kathua District: Security forces launched an operation to neutralize a suspected Pakistani terrorist hiding in Saida Sukhal village near the Koota Morh under Hiranagar police station.

Saida Sukhal: Terrorists Seek Refuge, Villagers Raise Alarm

The operation in Saida Sukhal unfolded after two recently infiltrated terrorists entered the village late Tuesday evening. According to the police, the terrorists approached houses seeking water, arousing suspicion among villagers. When the villagers raised an alarm, the terrorists resorted to random firing, injuring one civilian.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Hiranagar and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) immediately engaged the terrorists. A shootout ensued, leading to the death of one terrorist who attempted to attack the police party with a grenade.

Kathua Operation Details:

Providing details about the Kathua operation, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu zone, Anand Jain, stated, “Two terrorists, believed to have recently infiltrated from across the border, surfaced in Saida Sukhal village around 8 pm and requested water from a household. The residents grew apprehensive, and upon receiving information, a police team led by the sub-divisional police officer and Station House officer rushed to the village.”

The ADGP confirmed the death of one terrorist and elaborated that the operation in Saida Sukhal village, located over 60 km from Jammu city, was ongoing. An AK assault rifle and a rucksack were recovered from the slain terrorist. Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and determine their affiliation with a specific terrorist group.

Security Forces Hunt for Remaining Terrorist:

According to the ADGP, “One of the terrorists attempted to hurl a grenade and was eliminated in the exchange of fire. However, the second terrorist is reportedly still hiding within the village.” Security forces have cordoned off the area and are conducting a thorough house-to-house search to locate the remaining terrorist.

Civilian Injured, Family Evacuated:

Tragically, one civilian named Omkar Nath sustained an arm injury during the incident. He has been evacuated to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. His wife, who was also present during the attack, escaped unharmed.

Heightened Security Measures in Jammu:

The recent surge in violence has prompted a significant increase in security measures across Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces are maintaining high alert and conducting intensive patrolling operations to prevent further attacks.

This string of attacks highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir. The situation requires continued vigilance and a multi-pronged approach from security forces to maintain peace and stability in the region.
