US Supports India Over China’s Claims on Arunachal Pradesh: Strategic Implications

The US has voiced its clear stance amid controversies surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh in a recent development that captures the ongoing tensions between India and China. The region, long entangled in a territorial dispute between India and China, was spotlighted following Modi’s visit to inaugurate the strategic Sela Tunnel.

The event triggered protests from China, which reasserted its claim over the area. In response, a senior Biden administration official underscored the U.S. position, recognizing Arunachal Pradesh unequivocally as part of Indian territory. This affirmation comes in the face of China’s continued assertions to the contrary, marking a significant moment in the dynamics of international diplomacy in Asia.

At a daily press briefing, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel, explicitly stated the U.S. acknowledgment of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory. He emphasized strong opposition against any unilateral actions by China to advance its territorial claims along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) through military or civilian encroachments. This statement from the U.S. reiterates the nation’s commitment to supporting the status quo and opposing actions that seek to alter territorial boundaries unilaterally.

US Supports India Over China's Claims on Arunachal Pradesh

China, which refers to Arunachal Pradesh as Zangnan, has been vocal about its stance, especially following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to inaugurate the Sela Tunnel, situated at an altitude of 13,000 ft. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, through spokesperson Wang Wenbin, expressed that the so-called Arunachal Pradesh, as delineated by India, is not recognized by China. Wenbin further contended that the China-India boundary issue remains unresolved and criticized India’s unilateral developments in the region. Echoing similar sentiments, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang articulated that the southern part of Xizang (Tibet) is inherently Chinese territory and voiced firm opposition against the recognition of Arunachal Pradesh by India.

Nonetheless, India stands firm against China’s assertions, maintaining that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral component of the country. According to New Delhi, the occasional visitation of Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh, in the same manner as they would to any other state, is a standard and reasonable practice. The Indian government has reiterated that such visits and developmental activities in the state are within its sovereign right, highlighting that they do not alter the fundamental truth of Arunachal Pradesh being an inseparable part of India. This stance has been communicated to the Chinese side on numerous occasions, reinforcing India’s position against any external claims.
