Prime Minister Narendra Modi made significant announcements on the occasion of International Women’s Day, aimed at easing the financial burden on households and empowering women across the country.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi declared a reduction in LPG cylinder prices by ₹100, a move intended to provide relief to millions of families. This decision, announced on March 8, aligns with the government’s commitment to supporting women and ensuring an easier standard of living for them.
The Prime Minister emphasized that by making cooking gas more affordable, the government aims to enhance the well-being of families and contribute to a healthier environment. This initiative is part of the broader strategy to empower women and promote their socio-economic development.
Moreover, in a move to further assist women beneficiaries, the Modi government extended the subsidy of ₹300 per LPG cylinder under the Ujjwala Yojana for the next fiscal year, starting April 1. This extension ensures continued support to women from economically weaker sections, enabling them to access essential cooking fuel at subsidized rates.
The Ujjwala Yojana, launched in May 2016, has been instrumental in providing deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from low-income households. While the initial connection was provided free of cost, beneficiaries were required to purchase subsequent LPG refills at market prices.
Recognizing the rising fuel prices and their impact on households, the government had earlier enhanced the subsidy for PMUY beneficiaries. In October last year, the subsidy was increased from ₹200 to ₹300 per cylinder, providing significant relief to millions of families across the country.
The decision to extend the subsidy for another year, benefiting nearly 10 crore families, underscores the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable sections of society, especially women. The move is estimated to cost the exchequer ₹12,000 crore, reflecting the government’s prioritization of women’s welfare and empowerment.
This announcement comes at a crucial juncture, with the general elections scheduled in April-May. By extending the Ujjwala subsidy and reducing LPG cylinder prices, the Modi government aims to address the concerns of women voters and demonstrate its commitment to their well-being.
The reduction in LPG prices and the extension of subsidies highlight the government’s proactive approach to addressing socio-economic challenges and ensuring inclusive growth. As India celebrates International Women’s Day, these initiatives serve as a testament to the government’s dedication to promoting gender equality and empowering women across the nation.
